The album of 97 postcards was donated to the Society by John Graham Lane, a long time Blackheath resident. He was an architectural partner with Denys Lasdun, architect of the National Theatre, retiring at the end of the 1980s. Several came from Bill Barham's small stamp, coin & curio shop (Vale Stamps) at 21 Tranquil Vale and most were posted between 1902 and 1908.
Postcards were the early C20th equivalent of today's texts, allowing people to keep in touch. In the absence of phones, a number refer to making arrangements to meet their friends at a specified time in particular places.
Several also refer to illness or recovery therefrom. A number are addressed to parents from despondent children who had been sent away from home and who were missing their parents.
The dates shown with the images refer to when thy were franked by the post office on the rear of the card, not to when the photographs were taken.
