Blackheath Village Centre - Tuck's Corner 1847/8br/ br/ The name quot;Tuck's Cornerquot; derives from the 1822 development of the site and the success of the business since 1835 of Barber Tuck, a greengrocer and wine merchant. For 50 years Tuck's grocery and wine shop was one of the most successful businesses in the Village. The business was controlled by the Tuck family until 1885 when the site was demolished for re-development. Tuck was followed (briefly) by the Central Supply Stores, by the London and Suburban Stores, and in 1895 by J.W. Chester. In 1900, Thomas Foster amp; Co took over and they remained the owner until 1970 (although the company was controlled by others), with the emphasis more and more on wine and spirits. Taken over by larger and larger groups, it traded under the Peter Dominic name, who left in 1972 and moved to No 4. Tranquil Vale.br/ br/Thus 140 years of continuous trade as a wine shop ceased. Calvert Hunt and Barden then traded here before they were subsumed by General Accident, trading as GA Property Services. Today it trades under the John Payne label.br/ br/ On the right of the photo are the initials WSS. This refers to W.S Shove, who traded as a coal, corn and seed merchant from No 22 (now Cluttons) from 1843 to 1913.
